Promoting Workplace Learning Research

The research element of the Promoting Workplace Learning project has now been completed.

Research work has been carried out by Futureskills Scotland on behalf of the PWL Project Management Team. Their Workplace Learning Report produced in October 2005,  highlighted several of the reasons why this project is so important to employers in Scotland.

For example, the PWL team have identified the following findings:

  • Over one-third of employers who took part in the 2004 survey reported they had not delivered training in the previous 12 month period.
  • More than half of establishments employing less than 5 people did not provide training.

These are just two statistics that highlight how important the promotion of workplace learning is in Scotland.

Blake Stevenson have concluded their work on the Workplace Learning Evaluation Tool.  They  were also tasked to produce an Additional Research Report on Workplace Learning, considering the following points:

  • the range of delivery tools used in the provision of workplace learning opportunities, ie. self-directed, CD-Rom based learning material, peer mentors, e-learning, etc;
  • the range of 'soft' skills being delivered and the selected delivery method;
  • where workplace learning is provided/offered, do employers relate the learning to National Occupational Standards;
  • whether employers measure 'Return on Investment' and in what fashion;
  • proportion of in-house workplace learning being delivered by trained and qualified trainers;
  • how public stakeholders currently measure the impact of what workplace learning is being delivered.

GEN Consulting were asked to assess the research reports delivered by Futureskills Scotland and Blake Stevenson.  The Assessment of Research Report provides a good summary of the current trends in workplace learning in Scotland, placed within an International context.
